It's 2252 and Europa, Mars, Earth's Moon, Titan and several large asteroids have all been permanently colonized. Earth has no countries, only corporations and a corrupt, ornamental United Nations. Europa Station otherwise known as The Nexus is one of the densest populated places not on Earth. Constructed more than a century prior the station serves as a research station, mining facility, and trading port. Populated by colonists, visited by merchants, run by corporations, and monitored by Earth's United Nations The Nexus is a hub of activity. Colonists on the station have over the years had to deal with accidents, malfeasance, food shortages, and military conflicts. Workers slave away in the mines, must struggle with maintaining an aging station, all while under the foot of corporate greed and the indifferent presence of Earth's Military. But recently the Free Europa movement has seen a resurgence. New refugees from Earth and other colonies have added to their ranks. Titan’s station The Bastion was temporarily seized by insurrectionists, though Earths’s Military has retaken control, and rumors circulate that the same thing could be done here on The Nexus. Corporations protect their interests ruthlessly and so mercenaries have been hired to stamp out rebellion. Research continues and so does mining and commerce. The Military is uneasy. They have standing orders not to interfere in day to day operations. The top brass are constantly reevaluating whether actions by the Free Europa insurrectionists override those orders.
